Heights & Distances - How It Appears in JEE

8 recurring patterns. Learn the pattern, recognize it in 5 seconds, apply the right approach.

01

Find Height from Angle of Elevation

Pattern

Given the angle of elevation and horizontal distance (or related info), find the height of a tower, building, or pole

How to recognize

Mentions 'angle of elevation', asks to find height/length of a vertical structure

Draw the right triangle. Identify the angle, the opposite side (height), and the adjacent side (distance). Use tan(angle) = height/distance. If the observer's height is given, add it to get the total height.
02

Find Distance from Angle of Depression

Pattern

Given the angle of depression from a height, find the horizontal distance or distance to an object

How to recognize

Mentions 'angle of depression', asks for distance to a point/object on the ground

Remember: angle of depression = angle of elevation (alternate angles). Draw the triangle, mark the depression angle at the top, then use tan(angle) = height/distance to find the unknown.
03

Two Observation Points

Pattern

Two points at known separation observe the same object, find the height or one of the distances

How to recognize

Two angles of elevation given from two different points, or asks for height using two observations

Set up two right triangles sharing the same height. Let the nearer distance be x, so the farther is x + d. Write tan equations for both angles, eliminate x to find h (or vice versa).
04

Moving Object Problems

Pattern

An observer moves toward or away from an object, angle of elevation changes, find the height or distance moved

How to recognize

Keywords: 'walks towards', 'moves closer', 'after walking d metres', angle changes from alpha to beta

Identical setup to two-point problems. The key is that the observer moves along a straight line toward/away from the base. Use h = d * tan(alpha) * tan(beta) / (tan(beta) - tan(alpha)).
05

Shadow Length Problems

Pattern

Find shadow length given height and sun's elevation, or find height from shadow data

How to recognize

Mentions 'shadow', 'sun's elevation', 'sun's altitude', or change in shadow length

Shadow length = h * cot(theta). For change-in-shadow problems, set up two equations for the two sun positions and subtract or divide.
06

Height of Cloud / Reflection

Pattern

Find the height of a cloud above a lake using elevation and depression angles to the cloud and its reflection

How to recognize

Mentions 'cloud', 'reflection in lake', angles of elevation and depression from a point above the lake

Let the cloud be at height h above the lake and the observer at height a above the lake. The reflection appears at depth h below the lake surface. Use tan(alpha) = (h - a)/d and tan(beta) = (h + a)/d, then eliminate d.
07

Objects on Inclined Plane

Pattern

Find heights or distances involving objects on hills, slopes, or inclined surfaces

How to recognize

Mentions 'hill', 'incline', 'slope', or an object on top of an elevated surface

Use the sine rule when the triangle is not right-angled. Break the problem into components along and perpendicular to the incline. Account for the inclination angle separately.
08

Multi-Step Elevation Problems

Pattern

Problems requiring multiple triangles, combined elevation and depression, or intermediate calculations

How to recognize

Involves both elevation and depression, multiple objects, or a flag/antenna on top of a building

Break into sub-problems. Draw each right triangle separately. Use elevation for the building height and a second triangle for the flagstaff. Total height = building + flagstaff.
